Dark and Desolate

While looking through the countless internet articles on ambient metal bands late last night, I stumbled upon this picture.  Some might recognize it as the artwork from Agolloch's 2010 release, Marrow of the Spirit.  While i am not one to appreciate modern artwork (for its lack of depth and meaning), this piece really spoke to me on many levels.  It is a picture of a barren land, rid by the winter's cold.  While I am not a fan of Agollochs' music, I do appreciate the image they give off, especially by this piece.  Looking at this while listening to the album In The Nightside Eclipse by Emperor gives me a very uneasy and lonely feeling which is exactly what that album wants you to feel.  If you read the lyrics, many songs describe a nordic landscape that is dark and desolate.  It makes you feel very alone and vulnerable, leaving you open for the music to take over and lead you on an atmospheric journey through it.  For me, while I have listened to the album plenty of times, last nights listen while immersing myself into the record was the absolute best playthough I have ever had with any Emperor album.  I really encourage you to do the same, as it does make the album come alive a lot more!
